LOS ANGELES: Viola Davis, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Cynthia Erivo joined some 300 actors and playwrights on Tuesday in decrying racism within the US theatre world, saying it had exploited, excluded and diminished folks of coloration.

In an open letter addressed to “Dear White American Theatre,” the signatories complained of tokenism, prioritizing white theatre for white audiences, and a failure to make promised modifications in programming or management.

The letter follows a nationwide reckoning within the United States about systemic racism, sparked by the loss of life of African American George Floyd below the knee of a white police officer final month. Floyd’s funeral, broadcast nationwide, occurred on Tuesday in Houston, Texas, after two weeks of avenue protests across the world.

“We have watched you employ our BIPOC (black, indigenous, folks of coloration) faces in your brochures, asking us to politely shuffle at your galas, talkbacks, panels, board conferences, and donor dinners, in rooms stuffed with white faces,” the letter stated.

It was addressed not simply to theatre homeowners and theatre corporations but in addition to critics, casting administrators, brokers, labor unions and college coaching packages.

“We have watched you exploit us, disgrace us, diminish us, and exclude us. We see you,” it stated, including that regardless of holding anti-racism workshops, few modifications are made to theatre packages or management.

“This is a home that won’t stand. This ends TODAY,” the letter stated.

It was accompanied by a change.org petition demanding reforms within the theatre that by late Tuesday had been signed by nearly 50,000 folks.

Others signing included “This is Us” star Sterling Okay. Brown, “Pose” star Billy Porter, playwright Lynn Nottage, “Black Panther” actress Danai Gurira, and “Orange is the New Black” Emmy winner Uzo Aduba.
