JK Rowling’s tweets on transgender people spark outrage
LOS ANGELES: “Harry Potter” creator JK Rowling is going through hefty backlash after she posted a collection of tweets about transgender folks.
Rowling drew outrage Saturday on Twitter when she criticized an opinion piece revealed by the web site Devex, a media platform for the worldwide improvement neighborhood, that used the phrase “ individuals who menstruate.”
“I’m positive there was a phrase for these folks,” the well-known British creator tweeted. “Someone assist me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
She continued with one other thread talking in regards to the idea of organic intercourse.
“If intercourse isn’t actual, there’s no same-sex attraction,” she tweeted. “If intercourse isn’t actual, the lived actuality of ladies globally is erased. I do know and love trans folks, however erasing the idea of intercourse removes the flexibility of many to meaningfully talk about their lives. It isn’t hate to talk the reality.”
Rowling’s tweets triggered a firestorm of responses from the LGBTQ neighborhood and others who have been upset along with her phrases. A Harry Potter fan group tweeted its disapproval of Rowling’s submit and inspired followers to donate to a gaggle that helps again transgender ladies.
Rowling stated she respects “each trans individual’s rights to reside any manner that feels genuine and comfy to them.” She went on to say she would march “when you have been discriminated towards on the premise of being trans. At the identical time, my life has been formed by being feminine. I don’t imagine it’s hateful to say so.”
GLAAD issued a response on Twitter, calling Rowling’s tweets “inaccurate and merciless.” The advocacy group devoted to LGBTQ equality then requested these upset by the creator’s feedback to help organizations that assist black transgender folks.
“JK Rowling continues to align herself with an ideology which willfully distorts information about gender identification and people who find themselves trans,” GLAAD tweeted. “In 2020, there isn’t a excuse for focusing on trans folks.”
Rowling’s consultant has not responded to an e mail request for remark.
